From teaching at university to studying at University College London, and then becoming a practicing lawyer, I experienced a cross-border journey intertwined with law and poetry. Tagore's poetry is like a light, illuminating my deep pursuit of freedom and ideals. And this pursuit has also been present in my over thirty years of legal service career.

In the early days of foreign-related legal services, the business mainly focused on foreign direct investment and mergers and acquisitions. My team members and I are like pioneers, exploring and moving forward in this emerging field. Every project is a tough battle, and we not only need to be proficient in domestic laws, but also understand international rules and the legal systems of different countries. For the translation of a clause or the assessment of legal risks, one often works late at night and repeatedly deliberates. Although those days were hard, they were full of a sense of achievement. We have witnessed the birth of joint ventures between China and foreign countries, injecting legal protection into the development of the Chinese economy.

However, the legal industry is like a constantly changing ocean, always filled with new waves. In 2008, the global financial crisis triggered by the subprime mortgage crisis in the United States made me realize that traditional foreign direct investment and mergers and acquisitions would face enormous challenges. At this time, customs and import/export compliance business have emerged. I adjusted my direction accordingly and led the team to delve into this field. At that time, the customs legal services of Chinese law firms were almost non-existent, and we faced fierce competition from international accounting firms and international law firms. But we did not back down, relying on our persistence in the law and a deep understanding of customer needs, we took one step at a time to explore the market. After years of hard work, we have finally established a firm foothold in the field of customs business and provided high-quality legal services to numerous multinational enterprises.

In 2016, the incident of a Chinese telecommunications manufacturing giant being sanctioned by the US Department of Commerce made me deeply realize the importance and urgency of this field. In the wave of globalization, enterprises will face enormous risks if they do not understand the regulations on export controls and economic sanctions. So, I once again embarked on a new journey, leading a team to conduct in-depth research on the regulation and sanctions of the United States and the European Union. After several years of effort, our foreign-related control and sanction consulting business has gradually matured, providing professional risk assessment and response strategies for domestic and foreign enterprises.

In addition to providing legal professional services, I am also actively committed to promoting China's foreign-related rule of law to the outside world. For several consecutive years, I have delivered keynote speeches, lectures, or training on trade compliance at international seminars, overseas institutions, and European universities. In 2024, my English monograph "Contemporary China Export Control Law" was published overseas and listed as a reference for graduate teaching in the field of trade compliance by European universities. This is not only my personal honor, but also a microcosm of China's foreign-related rule of law going global.

Poetry touches people's souls, which is why I am close to poetry. In addition to my busy legal work, translating 'The Lost Birds' has become my soulful journey to explore Tagore's poetic emotions. Tagore's poetry is full of profound insights into human nature, life, and the world, which coincide with the fairness, justice, and truth that I pursue in my legal work. The process of translation is a "dialogue" with Tagore, as well as an exploration of one's own inner self.

Law and literature, seemingly completely different fields, in my opinion, have an inherent connection. Law is the cornerstone of social order, pursuing fairness and justice; Literature is the expression of human emotions, exploring the meaning of human nature and life. They are all aimed at making human society a better place. The road ahead is still long, and the field of foreign-related legal services is still full of opportunities and challenges. I will continue to ride the waves in the ocean of law and safeguard the global development of Chinese enterprises; They will also soar freely in the sky of literature, using the wings of translation to convey more beauty and hope. Because I deeply understand that whether in the temple of law or in the garden of literature, I am a bird pursuing freedom and truth, and will never lose my direction.
